Get a handle on what will survive the test of style now and in the future.  The New York Times interviewed several contemporary furniture experts asking what designs produced since 2000 would still be on the style radar in 2050?  Several answers are available right here at SR Hughes

Pictured top down are Kartell’s Ghost chair and Bourgie lamp, B&B Italia’s Metropolitan Chair, and Tom Dixon’s Beat Lights.  We invite you to stop in and find all of these NY Times picks, or choose from hundreds of other innovative ideas to find your own future classic.

Tom Dixon Makes Things Better

May 5, 2012

Get a load of this article recently published in the Wall Street Journal.  I love how Tom Dixon’s DIY attitude started him along the way … creativity and experimentation keep it all humming along today.  Authentic ideas and curiosity … I think that is why there is an exciting vibe about the Tom Dixon brand …

The release of Stamp lights and candle holders at this spring’s Salone del Mobile in Milan gives us more than an object to point at and say “cool.”  It spurs us to imagine a world in which high tech industrial technology may even allow a small local shop to custom design and produce goods for clients as they wait.  Take a look …

Artful Affordable

November 18, 2011

Who knew brass could lose its yesteryear stodginess and become today’s hot metal?  By combining the British industrial revolution’s materials (cast iron, enamel, copper, brass, marble, and solid wood) with today’s industrial processes, Tom Dixon has been able to breathe new energy into grandma’s candlesticks …

Case in point:  ETCH CANDLE HOLDER, $55

Using the technology employed to cut circuit boards, detailed designs are photo-etched onto brass sheets.  Then, all unexposed areas are dissolved with acid, leaving the intricate patterns cut into metal.  Flat-packed for you to assemble and your handiwork is part of the process.  Hardware is included so that you can join multiple holders together for your own sculptural table scape.

The warm glow is all you:  ETCH PENDANT, $285

Another great idea from Tom Dixon … whether to spiff up your own digs in advance of holiday visitors or to give to that stylish, creative person on your list … is the Magically Oversized Knob!

Starting at $55 for the 4″ diameter, these thick chunks of colored glass mount to your wall so that you can hang your coat or dog leash in the mud room when you come in the back door.  Or, you can mix color and size (large is 10″ round) to create art on your wall wherever you hang your hat!

The gift department at SR Hughes is bigger than ever!  You’ll find these and more innovative ideas for giving only at SR Hughes.  We invite you to support local Oklahoma businesses wherever you buy this season:

Omar Arbel Shops For Lights

April 7, 2011

“IT’S really easy to get mystical when you talk about light, so I hesitate,” said Omer Arbel, an architect based in Vancouver, British Columbia. “But I do acknowledge that light touches people’s souls in an interesting, subconscious way — light is a medium you can manipulate to evoke emotion.”

In my experience, nothing could be more true. Yes, I work in design. I sell lighting to people. But, one of the reasons I love doing this stems directly from Omar Arbel’s sentiment. I’m passionate about it because I believe light feeds our beings in some mysterious way. I think most people feel this, even if they do not recognize why. When you light a space properly, the whole environment sings … It nourishes us. I think good design is connected to emotion, and when lighting design is good — you feel it in the space. I watch people when they shop in the store. They can sense what is good, even when they don’t know exactly how to use it. So, why don’t you go shopping with Omar for lights … see what he has to say. Then, come by the SR Hughes showroom at Center 1 and let us help you create positive energy in your own space … with fantastic lighting.
