There is something about a home without books that I find unsettling. Even with modern technology leaving print behind, I believe we’ll always want our homes to include mementos tracing our travels and concrete manifestations of ideas we find interesting. I’d rather stack those things up and keep them close by, not fumble through my phone to find the photo of …

Part of the beauty I find in working with good design has to do with the creative ideas behind the objects. Case in point: MOOV seating by Piero Lissoni for Cassina.

“I like to hope that man will work to create a house no bigger than his body, and put all of his fantasies inside it together with his motivations and that he would then use his genius for adapting to the situation.” Francis Ponge writes about the most perfect architecture: the shell.
Moov came to life thinking about who should live it: the human body, its movements, it is organized as an environment yet as a piece of architecture, with a soul of steel running through it showing itself when its service is called on. The double soul of the Moov sofas revealed in the compositional system and takes on every possible shape, orientation, size and formation. Or in the impeccable shape that attracts the eye even when the sofa has been stripped of the informal array of cushions. Or, finally, in the eccentricity of its size: since bodies are all different, and there is no point building objects based on an alleged uniformity.”

I appreciate the thoughtful approach to MOOV. The abstract idea that is the beginning … leads to an authentic result. Begin with a spare space … “a house no bigger than his body”… no bigger than anyone really needs. Such efficiency! But what about all of those “fantasies and motivations” that live within the inhabitant … they have to flourish in that compact space too! How do you do it?

Pack on nothing more onto the frame that need be … “an impeccable shape that attracts the eye.” Now, make it flexible … to adapt, accommodate, and comfort all of those fantasies and motivations of the person who lives here. Petite enough for one, large enough for family, kids, and dogs. Backs folded down for a composed conversations, backs raised to cradle you as you kick up your heels to watch the DVR marathon of Mad Men. Comfort — this is a must! Finally, construct its soul of steel because with an idea this good, you want to keep it close for years to come …
Meet MOOV in person at SR Hughes at Center 1 and see if it helps you realize who lives in your home.
