Design First: LC2

September 2, 2011

I admit.  I’m a furniture geek.  But, I love this ad published in a recent issue of Elle Decor.

It promotes thinking about design before you finish the space.

Why?

Because good, authentic pieces can go anywhere.  When you make the right choice initially, the rest just falls more easily into place.

How does one “makes the right choice?”

Let history do a little of your homework for you.  The entire Corbusier collection is made under license by Cassina.  The licensed pieces are proven design icons … 80 years and counting.

How about this lesser known fact?  There has always been variety in colors, finishes, and materials across the collection … so, you have all the tools you need to design your piece of history.

Choose authentic, quality pieces that you love.  Don’t be afraid to commit!  These pieces will go from home to home, before the architecture, the surfaces, the paint are ever even considered.  And so it should be!

Be Aware of Imitators

August 12, 2011

Or, as the adage suggests … should we be flattered by them?

Whatever the case, I just say know what you’re buying and why.

Licensed manufacturers of classic designs are often imitated.  On some level, it speaks to the quality of that original idea.  Saarinen’s table is so perfectly proportioned, so extremely elegant … everyone wants in on the game!

The licensed manufacturer of the piece (in the above example Knoll) represents top quality and adherence to the designer’s original intent … nothing tweaked to confound original scale and elegance.  Nothing compromised.

An original idea is sometimes bigger than the way we usually see it.  Corbusier’s foundation reveals that this famous chair was originally conceived in a whole host of colors and finishes. You can break the black and chrome barrier to try your own interpretation but still remain faithful to the original idea…

You can see quality, you can feel it with your hands, it gives you satisfaction every day you live with it.  We want you to have years, even generations, of use and enjoyment!  I can remember a client once telling me that they purchased a pair of Cassina sofas back in the early 1980’s when they lived in Florida.  Two teenage boys and 25 years later when they moved to Tulsa, those sofas went directly into their living room without missing a beat … original upholstery and all!

Does this mean you can’t take home a flea market treasure?  Absolutely not!  Nothing wrong with a bargain.  But, if you cast off purchases (bargains or no) often, maybe you’ve not found your true love, the right fit, the home that truly reflects who you are and how you live.  That fake Barcelona (“Farcelona”) chair is a chunk of your hard-earned dough no matter what you paid for it!  Maybe you’d consider what will stand up to the test of time?

If you’re not sure about it, just go slowly.  Educate yourself about what is out there:  who produces quality, can you customize the piece in ways consistent with the designer’s original idea, is this the right item for my home?  Then proceed with confidence and commitment about what you want — you’ll discard less and love more as these decisions age gracefully over time in your beautiful home.

SR Hughes showroom is the only place in Oklahoma for original designs from the Modern masters as well as the best in contemporary furniture design today.  Visit us today and we’ll help you express your original style!

From Feb 28th – March 3rd, save on authorized classics from Knoll like the Saarinen table in this post!

I love it, but my house isn’t modern

July 25, 2011

I’ve worked for SR Hughes for ten years and I can’t tell you how many times I have heard “I love it, but my house isn’t modern.”  I think that if you love it, it doesn’t matter.

I love it, but it’s too modern

Your mother’s grandfather clock and Heriz carpet can look beautiful next to your more contemporary pieces.

I love it, but it’s too modern.

I love this bedroom with  mirrored side tables, glass lamps and such a beautiful color palate.  The Ingo Maurer’s Zettle’z fixture, Kartell‘s Louis Ghost Chair and FLOS Kevlin Table Lamp feel right at home with their more traditional counterparts.

I love it, but it’s too modern.

What’s not to love here.  You can almost hear the warm laughter of a family gathering in this inviting dining room.

Love, it’s a funny thing.  I guess what they say is true, sometimes opposites attract.

Visit SR Hughes at Center 1— we’ll help you find the perfect mix for the way you want to live.

Blue Chip Beauties

August 7, 2010

“Sometimes, nothing beats a classic” says Interior Design Magazine.  The playful parade of iconic Petit Confort armchairs in … drumroll please … COLORS!  Oh, Dieter!  Say its not true!  What has become of the black turtleneck, beret, and Corbusier chair?  Nothing!  Its all part of the original intent of the designers.  Cassina produces the chair using colored frames as well as chrome.  Upholsteries in fabrics as well as leather (not to worry, black is still available).  And now, the option of feather padded cushions only highlights the relationship between the rigid steel frame and the comfort that exists within.  Updates in colors and materials for 2010 have been carried out with the approval of the Corbusier Foundation so now you can have more fun, freedom, and comfort to create your own licensed version of the classic!

From Oct 6-18, 2011 save 15% on all of Cassina’s licensed reproductions of Corbusier designs.  Stop by the SR Hughes showroom and design your own authentic masterpiece!
