Moov In: Who Lives Here?

March 17, 2012

Part of the beauty I find in working with good design has to do with the creative ideas behind the objects.  Case in point:  MOOV seating by Piero Lissoni for Cassina.

“I like to hope that man will work to create a house no bigger than his body, and put all of his fantasies inside it together with his motivations and that he would then use his genius for adapting to the situation.”  Francis Ponge writes about the most perfect architecture: the shell.

Moov came to life thinking about who should live it: the human body, its movements, it is organized as an environment yet as a piece of architecture, with a soul of steel running through it showing itself when its service is called on. The double soul of the Moov sofas revealed in the compositional system and takes on every possible shape, orientation, size and formation. Or in the impeccable shape that attracts the eye even when the sofa has been stripped of the informal array of cushions. Or, finally, in the eccentricity of its size: since bodies are all different, and there is no point building objects based on an alleged uniformity.”

I appreciate the thoughtful approach to MOOV.  The abstract idea that is the beginning … leads to an authentic result.  Begin with a spare space  … “a house no bigger than his body”… no bigger than anyone really needs.  Such efficiency!  But what about all of those “fantasies and motivations” that live within the inhabitant … they have to flourish in that compact space too!  How do you do it?

Pack on nothing more onto the frame that need be … “an impeccable shape that attracts the eye.”  Now, make it flexible … to adapt, accommodate, and comfort all of those fantasies and motivations of the person who lives here.  Petite enough for one, large enough for family, kids, and dogs.  Backs folded down for a composed conversations, backs raised to cradle you as you kick up your heels to watch the DVR marathon of Mad Men.  Comfort — this is a must!  Finally, construct its soul of steel because with an idea this good, you want to keep it close for years to come …

Meet MOOV in person at SR Hughes at Center 1 and see if it helps you realize who lives in your home.

Febo is Tradition Updated

November 22, 2011

The blanket stitching is unpretentious.

The entirely upholstered body and leg keeps things simple, but if you want the wood base just ask.  Two seat heights allow use as sofa or banquette.

The same slightly curved body makes a beautiful headboard.  Quiet elegance.

And a whole host of chairs ranging from dining to lounge to chaise … all share beguiling soft curves.

Febo, the fetching collection just off the boat from Milan.  So ravishing, no one would expect her steel structure.  Febo from Maxalto.

Update your traditional sensibilities with a little help from Febo and SR Hughes.

We love Ecosmart Fire’s new DISH for outdoor …

The 24″ pit is made of all-weather black steel with a beautiful rust finish.  It comes with the AB3 burner fuelled with bioethanol — a renewable energy source that generates a beautiful orange flame with no smoke, smell, soot, sparks, or fuss.

Easy to use and operate, place the DISH just about anywhere (indoors or out).  Though it throws about 6,000 BTU (enough to heat a 10′ x 20′ space) it needs no vent system and is completely portable.

Order your outdoor fireplace from SR Hughes in October and we’ll dish up 15% savings for you.

Ventaglio: the art of living

June 22, 2011

Functional sculpture … table, desk … Ventaglio was designed by Charlotte Perriand in 1972 for her Meribel chalet.

The placement of boards for the top creates a beautiful sculpture … artful.  But, the unusual shape is also multi-functional.  She experimented with a similar organic shape as desk prior to Ventaglio …

… as seen in this office she designed for a newspaper editor in 1938.  The same gull-wing shape exists with Ventaglio to promote use as a desk, but the placement of individual planks creates unique spaces where both small and large groups of people can congregate with intimacy to share a meal or a game of cards.

In both the historic ’38 photo and as above in the present day, use of the LC7 stool as seat provides a beautiful contrast of materials from Perriand’s work … tubular steel and wood.  After all, it was her work with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jennaret to produce the famous “machines for living” during the late ’20s that brought her notoriety as a designer.

In my view, Ventaglio is seems influenced by her life in Japan (1940-46) where Elisabeth Vedrenne says  “In France, the bourgeois mind still confused emptiness with poverty or oblivion.  Accumulate nothing, be Zen — Le Corbusier had already prepared her for this … She became aware of the ideas of rhythm, lightness, transparency, depth of field, of the outside inside, and vice-versa — concepts she had already been playing with since the 1930s … in Japan she found everything she had been looking for.  She found corroboration for her knowledge of design and her pioneering intuitions.  The useful could be beautiful …”  Ventaglio, the art of living embodied.
