Congenial Company

September 7, 2011

This recent shoot of an apartment in Chicago appears in the August issue of Interior Design Magazine.  The article’s header reads, “Three centuries of art and design keep congenial company in the Chicago apartment of Gensler’s Carlos Martínez.”

If you click the photo above, you’ll get to view a great sideshow of this beautiful apartment.  But, before you go … a few things to note.

Pay attention to the artful of mixing classic modern, contemporary and 19th Century influences (in furniture, in art, and architecture).  It’s a beautiful, elegant, and livable space!

The architectural details have been restored, but it involved removing “decades of fusty upgrades to remove to get back to the 3,000-square-foot apartment’s original interior.”  Now, you can see marvelous details such as the plaster detail on the ceiling … peacefully coexisting with a Mies van der Rohe day bed and Le Corbusier LC2 chair!

The owners have been “collecting art over the past 20 years-the kind of modern and contemporary work most often imagined in stripped-down, crisp white environs. The transition would call for back-to-square-one strategizing and the subtle manipulation of everything from the floor plan to the finishes.”  Certainly, Martinez’s professional life as a designer helps pull this all together seamlessly.

I’ll let you in on a little secret … most of the furniture and lighting could have been sourced right here in Tulsa (hello, SR Hughes)!  Whether you know how to pull it together yourself (you don’t need any design degree) or if you put that trust in a professionally trained eye … SR Hughes works every day with both homeowners and designers alike.  Its easy!  And, wherever you need an extra hand, you can hire the contractor, the art dealer, and everything else you need to pull off your own masterpiece … right here in your own city.

Take a tour through this lovely home and dream a little … then get to work on realizing your own vision … the place you relax in, entertain in, laugh, love, and live in.  Tailor it specifically for you and how you live, then settle in and enjoy living — beautifully!

Red Hot from Milano … Planet Suspended Light

May 11, 2011

A beautiful soft shape floating in space … the organic nature of Planet has a certian gravitational pull.  That itself is reason enough to choose this as the suspended light over your dining table, kitchen island, or workspace.

However, closer inspection reveals another beautiful story… the spherical shape of this luminescent beauty comes not from an interior structure, but instead is created by the pattern sewn onto the outside of the fabric with a special yarn.

“The initial challenge was to create a fabric lamp that was completely empty and without an inner frame.  The idea was to create a load-bearing seam, which would be simultaneously structural and decorative.  Inspiration came from a system devised for the smart clothing used by astronauts, where external embroidery stitched with a special yarn allows the suit to adhere to the body, retaining total flexibility and freedom of movement, even in zero gravity.”

Foscarini’s Planet is the perfect synthesis of soft beauty and high technology.  I love when beauty comes not only from aesthetics but also from ideas.  When we talk with people about items to use in their homes, offices, or commercial spaces we can always direct them to things that will look good, work well, and last … but the idea of things being close to peoples hearts because of their story has always appealed to me most.

Stop by SR Hughes showroom.  We’ll help you find a creative solution to your own lighting challenge!

Omar Arbel Shops For Lights

April 7, 2011

20110407-063814.jpg

“IT’S really easy to get mystical when you talk about light, so I hesitate,” said Omer Arbel, an architect based in Vancouver, British Columbia. “But I do acknowledge that light touches people’s souls in an interesting, subconscious way — light is a medium you can manipulate to evoke emotion.”

In my experience, nothing could be more true. Yes, I work in design. I sell lighting to people. But, one of the reasons I love doing this stems directly from Omar Arbel’s sentiment. I’m passionate about it because I believe light feeds our beings in some mysterious way. I think most people feel this, even if they do not recognize why. When you light a space properly, the whole environment sings … It nourishes us. I think good design is connected to emotion, and when lighting design is good — you feel it in the space. I watch people when they shop in the store. They can sense what is good, even when they don’t know exactly how to use it. So, why don’t you go shopping with Omar for lights … see what he has to say. Then, come by the SR Hughes showroom at Center 1 and let us help you create positive energy in your own space … with fantastic lighting.

Let there be LIGHT….and a table.

March 27, 2011

Attempting to pair side tables and lamps can sometimes be very difficult.  The brilliant minds of design found a solution for this, combine the two.

A reading chair may look lonely, you may already have a side table that will not accomodate a table light, or you may not be able to fit a side table between two chairs…there are many reasons this concept fits the bill.

For the existing small side table that needs a light, pairing a subtle modern light not only adds style but most importantly, function.

Explore many of our lighting lines to find the light that fits your home and deocrating needs from Flos, Artemide, Ingo Maurer, Foscarini and Tobias Grau.  You can also view other blogger’s faves below … many of which we can help you source locally at the SR Hughes showroom.

Light Up Your Outdoor Nights

March 25, 2011

Good lighting is part of the architecture of good living.  But, sadly, it is often overlooked or undernourished when people build their indoor or outdoor spaces. Lighting supports living!

In outdoor spaces, it creeps down the wall from rubbery cones to softly illuminate the space next to the chairs where you and your cherie have a glass of wine in the evening …

It lights the pathway to your kitchen which is brimming with smells, laughter, and friends coming for dinner …

Its heavy gauge bronze shields your eye from harsh glare, while at the same time directing a soft wash of light upward and downward on the wall for a soft background glow…

…and creates an organic sculpture garden out in the sand where your guests carry their plates full of food to grab a seat, eat, and gab away the evening…

Yes, lighting is functional!  But, when imagined correctly, it’s also playful, beautiful, and innovative.  It helps you describe your home and your way of seeing life to your friends … without saying a word on the subject.  You’re simply free to live, laugh, and be in the moment with your guests for a wonderful night together!
