Light and Magic

April 20, 2012

Check out this edition of Design Gossip.  Rob Forbes, founder of Design Within Reach, explores lighting “design” in nature and in the built environment.  His photo essay is beautiful, and I like his willingness to explore the idea that “one of lighting’s other tasks might be to rekindle our interest in the character, magic, and elusive nature of light itself. The better designers do this unwittingly I believe. The perforations in the dome of Castiglioni’s Arco could have derived from seeing sunlight spots on people or on forms just as I witnessed in that café on Mallorca … I’m treated to a light exhibition every morning from my apartment in San Francisco. The more dramatic and colorful lightscape is perhaps the more seductive, but I’m partial to the other one. I see the lights on the buildings and the headlights from the cars and the neon café signage and it make me realize that lighting is all around us in its magical form, if we choose to see it.”

SR Hughes invites you to explore the ideas behind all the creative solutions that exist in lighting your environment.  Why not begin with a thoughtfully conceived building that invites light inside to live with you?  We’re constantly in search of innovative decorative lighting to help our clients complete environments that embrace “the character, magic, and elusive nature of light itself.”

Congenial Company

September 7, 2011

This recent shoot of an apartment in Chicago appears in the August issue of Interior Design Magazine.  The article’s header reads, “Three centuries of art and design keep congenial company in the Chicago apartment of Gensler’s Carlos Martínez.”

If you click the photo above, you’ll get to view a great sideshow of this beautiful apartment.  But, before you go … a few things to note.

Pay attention to the artful of mixing classic modern, contemporary and 19th Century influences (in furniture, in art, and architecture).  It’s a beautiful, elegant, and livable space!

The architectural details have been restored, but it involved removing “decades of fusty upgrades to remove to get back to the 3,000-square-foot apartment’s original interior.”  Now, you can see marvelous details such as the plaster detail on the ceiling … peacefully coexisting with a Mies van der Rohe day bed and Le Corbusier LC2 chair!

The owners have been “collecting art over the past 20 years-the kind of modern and contemporary work most often imagined in stripped-down, crisp white environs. The transition would call for back-to-square-one strategizing and the subtle manipulation of everything from the floor plan to the finishes.”  Certainly, Martinez’s professional life as a designer helps pull this all together seamlessly.

I’ll let you in on a little secret … most of the furniture and lighting could have been sourced right here in Tulsa (hello, SR Hughes)!  Whether you know how to pull it together yourself (you don’t need any design degree) or if you put that trust in a professionally trained eye … SR Hughes works every day with both homeowners and designers alike.  Its easy!  And, wherever you need an extra hand, you can hire the contractor, the art dealer, and everything else you need to pull off your own masterpiece … right here in your own city.

Take a tour through this lovely home and dream a little … then get to work on realizing your own vision … the place you relax in, entertain in, laugh, love, and live in.  Tailor it specifically for you and how you live, then settle in and enjoy living — beautifully!

College Lifestyle: Portable Panache?

August 13, 2011

College life means you’re on the move … but it doesn’t mean that your dormroom, apartment, or yurt has to suffer for style.  There are plenty of affordable ideas that will serve you well today without leaving your post-grad love interest wishing you’d just grow up.

Sit with style,  keep it flexibile (use indoors or out), and show them you know all about the Masters (Arne Jacobsen, Eero Saarinen, and Charles Eames).  Masters chair is a “stylistic summation” of three famous chair designs, and color or no, it’s a very easy go ($244).

Or, maybe Thalya’s sit is more your mood ($293)?  Shown here with the Francois Ghost mirror (starting at $410).  Choose clear or color … you can’t go wrong.

Ghost Buster comes in two sizes … for bedside, bathside, or entryway  ($412 and up).  Shown here with the Cindy lamp ($273) … the two go together or fly solo in any interior with perfect poise.

What’s that you say?  You spent all of your allowance on books but you still need a nightstand to put them on (in)?  Check out Anna Castelli Ferrieri’s Componibili shown above in white ($160).  Available in round or square.  Modular elements let you create what is right for you.  Oh yeah, they’re also displayed at MoMA and the Pompidou Centre in case anyone questions your authority.

If its side table you need but, like Saarinen you eschew a slum of legs, then consider Top Top table ($279).  Totally clear or with a colored top … this beauty will lighten your load.

You don’t have to don your orange jumpsuit to use the Mayday light ($108).  This industrial workhorse makes the perfect desktop light.  If you’re trying to create a chandelier ad-hoc because your landlord claims you’re not a certified electrical journeyman, Mayday saves the day!  The hook/handle acts as a cord winder and a vent hole in the shade lets you hang them together … swag those cords (you know you want to) and plug them in.  Done!

If Mayday isn’t quite up to the task, you might consider our new fave, Kelvin ($396).  Wall or table mount, it does the job.  Dimmable LED means you’ll have as much light as you like, never change the bulb, and only use 8 watts of power doing it!  Sounds like you could hook up your bicycle to that and pedal-power it.  Aren’t you the smart one!

SR Hughes showroom can fix your wagon liketly-split!  All the above available in stock or from quickship.

I love it, but my house isn’t modern

July 25, 2011

I’ve worked for SR Hughes for ten years and I can’t tell you how many times I have heard “I love it, but my house isn’t modern.”  I think that if you love it, it doesn’t matter.

I love it, but it’s too modern

Your mother’s grandfather clock and Heriz carpet can look beautiful next to your more contemporary pieces.

I love it, but it’s too modern.

I love this bedroom with  mirrored side tables, glass lamps and such a beautiful color palate.  The Ingo Maurer’s Zettle’z fixture, Kartell‘s Louis Ghost Chair and FLOS Kevlin Table Lamp feel right at home with their more traditional counterparts.

I love it, but it’s too modern.

What’s not to love here.  You can almost hear the warm laughter of a family gathering in this inviting dining room.

Love, it’s a funny thing.  I guess what they say is true, sometimes opposites attract.

Visit SR Hughes at Center 1— we’ll help you find the perfect mix for the way you want to live.
