A Bookish Sort

July 5, 2014

There is something about a home without books that I find unsettling.  Even with modern technology leaving print behind, I believe we’ll always want our homes to include mementos tracing our travels and concrete manifestations of ideas we find interesting.  I’d rather stack those things up and keep them close by, not fumble through my phone to find the photo of …

The Art of Relaxation

December 13, 2013

Darshan Phillips and his crew built this suspended sculpture in our showroom for our new window display.

We have this idea that at our best we can show people the art of furniture, lighting, rugs … that we can help them see something beyond what they imagined as a way to live in and use a home, office, or outdoor space.  So we asked Darshan how we might show people that idea with 4 individual chairs.  I thought this could be a challenge because not many people imagine something artful if you give them the word “recliner” as a beginning.

He came up with several ideas, but the one we thought was a no brainer was to build this suspended artwork in our store.  I have to say, we were stunned by the result.  It looks as if Darshan took a snapshot just as someone tore the wrapping off of a giant box and threw the glittering gold wrapping into the air exposing the gifts below.

We believe Cassina, Poltrona Frau, and B&B Italia have taken original ideas and translated them with the best materials and highest craftsmanship into 4 beautiful recliners … proof positive that there is an art to relaxation.

Click on the image above to see how the crew worked for several straight days to create this amazing floating piece of art and catch a glimpse of how to recline in style.  Then, come by the showroom to take a test drive and see it all in person.

Pictured top down are Kartell’s Ghost chair and Bourgie lamp, B&B Italia’s Metropolitan Chair, and Tom Dixon’s Beat Lights.  We invite you to stop in and find all of these NY Times picks, or choose from hundreds of other innovative ideas to find your own future classic.

Febo is Tradition Updated

November 22, 2011

The blanket stitching is unpretentious.

The entirely upholstered body and leg keeps things simple, but if you want the wood base just ask.  Two seat heights allow use as sofa or banquette.

The same slightly curved body makes a beautiful headboard.  Quiet elegance.

And a whole host of chairs ranging from dining to lounge to chaise … all share beguiling soft curves.

Febo, the fetching collection just off the boat from Milan.  So ravishing, no one would expect her steel structure.  Febo from Maxalto.

Update your traditional sensibilities with a little help from Febo and SR Hughes.

Take 2: I love modern, but my house is traditional

August 5, 2011

Elle Decor’s article Reviving a Historic House beautifully illustrates how traditional and modern design compliment each other.

It doesn’t get much more traditional than the house that Ted Tuttle bought.  It was designed by Elizabeth Ayer, the first woman to graduate from architecture school at the University of Washington in 1935.

Could you ever imagine this piece in this house?

Well, hello darling……..

Or what about the Kalos chair from B&B Italia’s Maxalto collection?

Hmmm, Kalos looks right at home ….

In fact, Elizabeth Ayer could have relaxed in this chair while studying the work of her contemporary Mies van der Rohe.  And, that Barcelona couch rests just as easily in the living room as it could have when Ms. Ayer lived there.

Whether contemporary, traditional, or Modern, classic style spans time effortlessly.  Go ahead, work out your traditional bones with a bit of modern living!

Hello From Milano

April 16, 2011

As usual, its been action packed.  The past 36 hours we’ve been, as my friend Stacie says, blowin-and-goin.

However … we’ve had time to stop and smell the roses.

The B&B/Maxalto factory tour was amazing … looks like they’re going to build you a car rather than a sofa.  No pics from there … super secret, but I’ll show you the fruits of their methods in the coming days … lots of great ideas.

Kartell‘s booth was fantastic … fun energy and ideas …

…and plenty of freshness for Tulsa in a mere few weeks!

Dinner courtesy of Alias and Giorgetti at Trattoria Arlati … crazy good as usual!

Excited to see Alias under original ownership and ready to meet the USA all over again!  The Manzu chair taken for the first time from a prototype of a sports car seat from 1967 is pure Italian style … with substance:

Brilliant lighting … Flos steals the show!

And tomorrow, its a scoot South to Tolentino to see the craftsmanship of Poltrona Frau:

So if you’re looking for me … you’re likely to see this as a blur because there’s still plenty to do before I fly on home!

Stay tuned … more to come!
