NY Times T Mag: A Fine Mess

December 15, 2012

Check out this recent photo shoot in designer Julia Muggenburg’s London townhouse.  Who says you have to pare back your style to include Modern or contemporary furniture?  In fact, the wild layering of Julia’s place feels more at home to me.  In fact, a Barcelona chair or daybed seem right at home here.  A powder blue LC or Cappellini’s Proust chair … art of course!  Click the photo to take a tour of this wonderful space, crack a smile, and imagine what it would be like to live here.

Take 2: I love modern, but my house is traditional

August 5, 2011

Elle Decor’s article Reviving a Historic House beautifully illustrates how traditional and modern design compliment each other.

It doesn’t get much more traditional than the house that Ted Tuttle bought.  It was designed by Elizabeth Ayer, the first woman to graduate from architecture school at the University of Washington in 1935.

Could you ever imagine this piece in this house?

Well, hello darling……..

Or what about the Kalos chair from B&B Italia’s Maxalto collection?

Hmmm, Kalos looks right at home ….

In fact, Elizabeth Ayer could have relaxed in this chair while studying the work of her contemporary Mies van der Rohe.  And, that Barcelona couch rests just as easily in the living room as it could have when Ms. Ayer lived there.

Whether contemporary, traditional, or Modern, classic style spans time effortlessly.  Go ahead, work out your traditional bones with a bit of modern living!

Barcelona: A Classic Fit for a Queen and now ON SALE at SR Hughes

February 9, 2011

Classic: adj. something that is a perfect example of a particular style; something of lasting worth with a timeless quality.

Yes, it is a perfect example of a particular style.

Lasting? I’d have to say Ole! Mies van der Rohe collaborated with Lily Reich to design the Barcelona Chair to be used in the pavilion of the 1929 Barcelona World Arts Fair. It was their interpretation of the folding chair used by Egyptian royalty and the Roman foot stool that became the throne for the King and Queen of Spain and other royalty during the fair. Today, along with more than 40 other Knoll products, the Barcelona chair is in the permanent collection at MOMA due to its pure composition which came to epitomize Modern architecture.

Timeless quality? Absolutely! You can choose this handwelted beauty in any color of leather to suit your style.

Truth is, everyone likes to be queen for a day. So, come visit SR Hughes at Center 1 3410 S Peoria Ave #100 Tulsa, Oklahoma during the Knoll Classics Sale September 23rd-October 1, 2011 and see what suits your style.
