New chef in town at Gemma’s

Gemma’s, the cozy little spot nestled in Center 1, has a new chef; Matt Owen.

Matt’s dad owned Brookside Cleaners for 15 years, so its only appropriate that he is back to head up the kitchen at Gemma’s in Brookside. Owen started cooking at Bodean’s and then soon after that he moved to Portland. While in Portland he attended the Western Culinary Institute and worked at Riverplace Hotel and Lauro Kitchen.

He has worked under Morgan Brownlow (former sous-chef at Oliveto), who has been Owen’s biggest influence.

Owen has traveled and studied in Japan, France and Hawaii, where he met his wife who is the sushi chef at In the Raw.

His plans for Gemma’s is to utilize the wood fired oven to its full potential, and offer more rustic Mediterranean food, which he has not seen a lot in Tulsa.

We look forward to seeing and experiencing what Owen’s brings to the table.
